Digital Character Design and Painting by Don Seegmiller
Since Don mentions Gliftic and Repligator in the book I thought I should return the compliment by giving you a quick overview of the work. Digital Character Design and Painting is really two books in one. It teaches the fundamentals of character design, and the skills tools and techniques needed to master digital painting. Character design is about ideas, imagination, and how to get a look and feel approriate to the character. Digital painting is not so much about ideas as about method, technique and artistic theory. I was impressed by the clear and direct way in which Don explains visual concepts and ideas. In fact some explanations gave me an artist's eye view of what is explained from a neuroscientist's viewpoint in Art and Vision by Margaret Livingstone. It really is two manuals in one. If you do not use Painter, or maybe are more comfortable with a program like Paint Shop Pro, you will have to mentally convert the tutorials into the Paint Shop Pro commands, but the book will still be a valuable addition to your library. The CD-ROM includes a demo of Painter 7, as well as demos of Gliftic and Repligator, and some QuickTime movies. Don Seegmiller has a BFA in Graphics Design with a specialization in illustration. He teaches a variety of drawing, illustration and digital painting courses and has most recently worked as the art director of Saffire Corp, a major videogame developer. (c) Owen F Ransen 2003 To
