Image Smoothing For Rhino 3D Meshes

While the transfer functions from pixel to mesh can do some smoothing for you sometimes it is easier to smooth the image itself before it gets to become a mesh. See the two examples below, and note the settings of the smoothing slider and the change in shape of the profile of the mesh.

Without smoothing the image above can make for a very rough mesh, as you can see from the blue profile graph. But with some smoothing (4% in the example below) the image remains recognizable (as does the mesh) but the profile is much smoother:
