Here are two of the most common problems you may come across.

 

A problem with automatic recognition may occur when the scanner is dirty or even disassembled!

 

The background of the scan (usually the white or beige plastic sheet which pushes your photos onto the glass) should be present and clean.

 

It is possible to take away that sheet with some scanners, but what is revealed is not a good background for scanning.

 

Here is an example of a slightly dirty background:

Another problem may happen if your scanner can be configured, with its own software, to scan in monochrome (black and white greyscale scanning). It may happen that you see a screen like this:

If that happens you may be able to resolve the problem by setting your scanner to scan in color.
