The Selection Rectangle

When you want to add a new image or change the selection of an existing image you can use the selection rectangle for large changes. (For small changes use the subimage fine tuning dialog.)
The selection rectangle appears in the scan area of the screen and looks like this:
This is a bit different from the selection rectangles you may be used to, but this is for several reasons:
You can remove the selection rectangle by hitting the ESC key on your keyboard.
As mentioned in point 2 above, the size of the selection rectangle is changed by dragging the straight arrows:
You can start a new selection rectangle by dragging far from the current one. You may want to do this if the rectangle gets impossibly small:
If you want to select small areas you can use the sub image fine tuning dialog to crop your larger selection.
