How to control the conversion of a photo to a 3d surface

The limits and curves dialog allows you to set how much of the dark part of an image (which may be noisy and result in an irregular mesh surface) affects the mesh height. Here are two examples:

In the above example the whole grey scale range has been transferred to the solid object, which gives more detail, but which may be too rough for the final application.

In the example below the range has been reduced, which gives a smoother mesh, but which also results in a loss of detail.

Which setting is best (and there are many variations) depends on your final use of the mesh. See also smoothing.
